Final storyboard:

Below, it shows our final storyboard for our horror film opening scene and it shows that it is different compared to our original storyboard that we had produced.

We had to make quite a few changes as we were unable to produce some of the things we wanted too as they would've been too difficult for us to act out.

For example, we were unable to get the string in order to look like the girl was being hung, and we added in a few extra shots to the original storyboard as we had to add a few more in on the day.

This image shows two of our shots, the one on the left is the actress sitting on a wall whilst staring at the figure that it behind the trees.

 The other shot shows that there will be a pan shot of the figure standing in the woods and it will be quite close to the camera.








This image shows the next two shots, there will be a hand - held medium shot of the actress walking towards the stairs, which will then be followed by a hand - held shot of her walking down the stairs and it will be quite a shaky and eerie shot.

This shows the next couple of shots, one they are in the bunker there will be a close up of the walls, where theres a drawing saying 'they're coming' which is accompanied by a triangle. It gives off quite a mysterious effect and comes across as quite eerie to the audience/viewers.

This shot is then followed by a tilt shot of the black figure standing in the corner of the room, letting the audience know that something scary may be about to happen in the scene.





This next shot shows a close up of the scary, torn up doll and the actress will be dropping it on the floor where there will also be a scream showing the viewers that something has occurred.

The final shot is the title, 'They're Coming', it will be quite bold serif text and it will fade into the screen and then suddenly disappear.

This is effective because it will be quite a dramatic ending.

Below is our draft for our storyboard, these are the individual shots as to what we would like to film on the day. We chose these shots as they fit in with our theme and genre of the opening scene.


This is the opening shot as it will start to create tension in the beginning of the scene which will then cause tension throughout.



This is a shot of the teddy/doll falling out of the girls hands.

Deconstruction of actors:


In psychological horrors there is normally the same type of characters throughout most of this genre of films. There is normally a normally family with parents, who usually have young children in which one of these children is normally the one to become possessed.
This relates to our horror scene because we used a young child who looked around the same age as the kids that are usually used in these psychological horror films.


In slasher horror films there can be a range of different characters throughout. However, there are normally only two or three of these actors who appear to be the main characters in the film, and the ones who usually get hurt or killed.

This photo shows the female actor from the psychological horror 'The Exorcist', It shows that she is a young girl which is normally the type of actor seen in this genre of horror movie.

Therefore, we will be using a young girl in our opening scene and this is the girl that will be participating:



 We will be making her face paler and using other types of make up in order to make her look more possessed so that she suits the common actors of psychological horror films.

Evaluation of preliminary task - editing

What did we do?

After we had finished planning and filming the preliminary task we uploaded the clips onto final cut pro. Once we had chosen which clips we were going to use, we put them into the correct order and then started to edit them. Below shows the editing that we used in our video:


This screenshot shows the beginning clip where we used text saying the title of our preliminary video. We did this by choosing the text option and then choosing the colours and font that we wanted.






This screenshot shows the clips where we added slow motion to show Charlie walking over to Georgia sitting on the bench. We did this by just choosing the slow motion option and the speed we wanted it which was on final cut pro.

For this part of the video, we had to cut the clips and put them in different points throughout the video to show the shot - reverse shots and make the video run more smoothly.








This final shot is of the last clip where Georgia is picking up all the paperwork which Charlie threw on the floor and it shows our credits appearing on the screen. We also did this by choosing the text option and then adding effects to it.


What went well?

Whilst editing the video, deciding where and what type of editing to use went well because we decided quickly and we knew how to add each piece of editing without having any troubles.

Problems encountered:

We had some problems when trying to get the video to run continuously and look right because at the start it looked quite fake. However, in the end we managed to figure out a way in order to get the video to look right and flow correctly.

What could we do to improve?

If we had to do this again, I would've filmed different clips and increase the range of clips because then we could've included more types of editing to make the video look more creative and professional. I would also work on the continuity of the video.

Mise-En-Scene of horror films - Georgia Serrecchia

Mise-En-Scene of horror films:

These photo's from the film 'Annabelle' and the 'Conjuring' show my inspiration for the mise-en-scene that I have created. They show a scary doll that is a common convention of horror films as the doll normally become possessed of possesses the main character.








Below are some photo's of what I have created which is a doll with pins in it and it's hair has been set alight. There is also crosses drawn on the dolls' body which symbolises death.
This fits into the theme of horror because the doll looks quite possessed and psychotic.

The photo on the right shows a box of matches which I used to light up the dolls' hair with. The photo on the left is the doll that i used.













This photo on the left shows the doll with pins in it and crosses over the face and body, the one on the right shows the same doll whilst we are lighting it's hair.

These two photos show me burning the dolls hair whilst she has crosses drawn over her and pins in her body. This creates a good effect because it creates black marks on her face and leaves her hair ratty and burnt.






These two photos show the doll after she's been burnt. It shows her marks on her face and black dust/ash in her hair which can fit the theme of horror because it gives the audience the impression that something bad has happened and it gives off a horrific effect.
                                                                   






What went well?

Whilst producing these dolls, it was very easy to make the dolls appear scary and like they're from a horror film, also it was very simple to draw on the stitches etc, and the doll did appear to look like something from a horror movie.

What would i do differently?

If I did this mise-en-scene task again I would get a different doll that was bigger, preferably like a china one as they are more commonly used in a supernatural horror film. Also, the hair of the doll was really hard to set alight and therefore we could've used a different doll in order to make this appear more realistic.

Why is this effective?

This is effective because the burning of the dolls hair creating black ash in her hair on her skin gives the audience the impression that something has happened to it which is unpleasant, it comes across as quite eerie and the pins stuck in make it fit in more with the genre. It's also effective because it conforms to the representations of the genre, due to most supernatural/psychological horror films involving a doll that is either becoming possessed or possessing someone.

Evaluation: Planning

What was done?

For the planning section of our preliminary task we first came up with the idea of our video, which was going to be a girl getting bullied by another girl. After that we came up with the name of our storyboard, which was ‘Mean Gal’. Before we drew out our neat version of our storyboard we planned what each shot would be. We then came to a final outcome of our storyboard.

Above is a photograph of what our storyboard ended up looking like. It shows clearly the theme we wanted to portray in our video. Once the storyboard had been completed we then allocated each other particular roles. Georgia’s role was to play the victim in the video. Charlie’s role was to play the bully and Natasha’s and my role was to film the video. Originally I was going to play the role of the bully as well, which is why you can see you bullies in the storyboard, but due to school reasons I was too late to the lesson and the filming process had already started.

What went well?

I think the things that went well were the different shots we planned to use for each part of the video as they looked as though they would flow well, for example when we used the shot-reverse-shot editing for the looks the two girls gave each other was quite effective, as you were able to see both the girls reactions.

Problems encountered:

During our planning process we didn’t really encounter any major problems, we did find it a bit tricky trying to fit all of our different shots into the boxes and explaining them, and were struggled slightly to think of something we could shoot for the match on action editing which could look effective. In the end we came to the decision to use Charlie opening the door, but using different shots to show her doing it. Other than that everything else went very smoothly.

If you were to do it again…

I think that if we were to do this task again we would change the idea for our video because, once we had watched it back after shooting it and once it had been edited we didn’t find it that interesting to watch and maybe it could have been better if the idea was more complex or exciting, with more actors involved. I also think that for our match-on-action editing we needed to include more shots as it looked fairly simple and almost wasn’t clear that it was match-on-action editing as there were only a couple of different shots used.
