Deconstruction of sound - Georgia Serrecchia

Deconstruction of sound:

The soundtracks used in horror films are normally quite eerie and slow paced, the type of music played is normally violin or string music as it's slow and creates tension.
Diegetic sound that is found in horror films can usually be things such a doors creaking, footsteps, screaming etc. Whereas non-diegetic sound that is common can involve creepy music, a narrator or a spirit.
These clips below are soundtracks that I have researched for that can be found in certain supernatural horror films.
This first clip found is a track called 'sleepy time 98' from the film the 'Sinister', which is a supernatural horror and can therefore be related to our film opening. This soundtrack plays string music which starts off slow and quiet, but becomes fast and loud. The fact that it starts off slow and gets faster and then keeps getting quieter and then louder again, makes it seem more eerie and creates more of a creepy tone to the film.

This next clip I found is from 'The Orphanage', which is also a supernatural horror. This music is also string music, however it starts of by playing a slow piano piece which is very quiet. After this quiet piano music, the violent and other string instruments come in which makes the soundtrack a lot more eerie and louder, it goes from loud to quiet and so on. These two pieces show that there is a common theme in the soundtracks from supernatural horrors as both these soundtracks have string music which is both loud and fast, and slow and quiet.

Deconstruction of locations - Georgia Serrecchia

Deconstruction of locations:

In horror films, especially supernatural films, they are normally taken place in a large house that's usually in the middle of no where. This house is normally surrounded by woods and the house usually belongs to a spirit or a demon.

The main part of the film is normally taken place in the house, however parts of the film are filmed in the forest/woods when a character is getting chased or there is a spirit/demon following her.
These are usually the main locations in supernatural horror films, however there is sometimes a cabin or church that may appear at some point throughout the film.

This image is the house in the 'Sinister', which you can see is in the middle of no where, surrounded by trees and it is an old looking house which appears to be quite big. There's normally a family that have just recently moved into the house thats normally haunted.

This photo shows the large house from the film 'The Orphanage', which is also a supernatural horror movie. This house s much larger than the house in the 'Sinister' but it still looked like quite an old house which is also in the middle of no where and surrounded  by many trees and forestry.

Both of these houses are very similar, which proves that the old house surrounded by forestry is a very common feature for the locations in supernatural horror films. We should incorporate this in our film opening as an idea because when choosing the location we should definitely think about it taking place in a large house or in a woods/forest area.
