Editing can be used in horror films to create tension and it is normally used at dramatic points in the film. Therefore, we need to incorporate different sounds and dramatic points throughout our supernatural horror film opening. A cut can be used to to keep the audience interested by changing from one viewpoint to another. There are many different types of cuts, such as a jump cut which is when the camera cuts away suddenly to create a dramatic point. There is also the cutting rhythm, which determines the speed in which things things are cut at and it also puts emphasis on a specific point. This links in with the cutting rate, which is when the camera cuts frequently as a means of interruption. The point of doing this is to induce shock and surprise into the audience.
Cross-cutting is also sometimes used and this is similar to a normal cut, the point of it is to cut from one line of action to another.
Motion on action is also used in horror films, this is to make the same piece of action seem interesting, by having lots of different shots of this action. This is usually follows by a reaction shot, which is simply just a shot of the actor reaction after a certain thing occurs.
This scene from 'Mama', shows some cross cutting and jump cuts, however there is also some fast-paced editing when the girl is trying to fight and get away from her Mum and then scratched her.
