Deconstructions of Production Companies- Charlotte Wilson

Deconstructions of Production Companies

Deconstruction of Ghost House Pictures

Ghost House pictures was created in 2002 by Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert who is an American film producer. The gene of films created is horror, some of the most popular films by Ghost House Pictures are The Grudge movies one and two, The Possession, The Bogeyman, 30 Days of Night and most recently The Poltergeist.
This is the video for Ghost House Pictures:

During the video we are first shown dim lighting where we then see an old door slams shut by itself, during this we hear a loud bang as the door slams but just before this we hear what sounds like someone screaming from a distance or a gush on wind.

The camera moves to a close up of the door's keyhole, where a skull suddenly appears through it.

The camera then moves back where the words "GHOST HOUSE" appear in a ghostly way in white writing on either side of the keyhole, and then the word "PICTURES" appears underneath in smaller text. During this we hear a child singing wordlessly, which fades out as well as the image.

I really like in this house it is conforming to a horror genre, I  liked the sound effects used creating a really spooky start to a film. I also really liked how the camera followed through from the door shutting to the close up on the key hole and the skull appearing I thought this was really effective and how the writing conformed the genre as well.

Deconstruction of a school made production company

This is the school made production company film opening I have found:

In this school made production company called ‘Vision Productions’ we firstly see an extreme close up of an green eye, which looks left to right, there is an effected over the top of it which is like a T.V. Loosing signal where it is going fizzy with likes flickering over it. We here the sound of  an old  film rolling and getting ready to play.

After the eye looks from left to right in capital white writing “VISION PRODUCTIONS” appear in an old classic computer font.

I think they probably made it by filming someone's eye and getting them to move it left right them straight forward. The effect over the top and sound was added during the editing process.

What I liked about it was how it could relate on any genre and not just a set one, I also like the effect over the top of it and  how the sound relates to the effect and the writing.

Deconstruction of one professional production company and one school production company - Natasha McGill

Deconstruction of Universal

The Universal Film Manufacturing Company was founded on April 30th 1912, in New York (103 years ago). Laemmle, who appeared as president in July 1912.

Examples of Universal Studios films:
  • Jurassic Park (1993)
  • The Grinch (2000)
  • Despicable Me 2 (2010 - 2013)
  • Furious 7 (2015)
  • Ted 2 (2015)
  • Unfriended (2015)
  • Pitch Perfect 2 (2015)

School made production company - Porcelain

What I liked:
  • It looked very professional because the way they done it, the image of the person grew as they added more detail onto the picture
  • The speed at which they flipped the pages worked well because it wasn't too slow that we couldn't see the changes but not too fast that we couldn't see each picture
  • It was good how the image grew close and closer until it was just his face
  • As they zoomed in the images still matched and the way it focused on his face and how a tear was added in looked very professional

What could be improved:
  • The whole sheet of paper could be included so more of the paper would be in the shot
  • Colour could have been added or even highlights and low lights to make the picture more effective

How they made it:

They would have used loads of different sheets of paper and would have had to drawn the image little by little, this way it would look effective and will look like a flip book. They would have had to drawn every image on a new bit of paper as it zooms in and by the end he looks happier, but because they would have had to redrawn the image they matched up well and wasn't out of line which was accurately drawn.

Timeline of credits of film opening Se7en - Natasha McGill

Timeline of credits of film opening Se7en

I had to deconstruct the title credits, and include a screen shot of every writing that came onto the screen. This was I was able to see the timings of when they next showed a different writing. This helped know when roughly the names and what they done should appear and how roughly they should be on screen for. Also when the new names appear unless it is a black screen which is only used a couple of times the image changes as well, so it looks like more is happening, building up more suspense. By deconstructing this opening credits it has given me more understanding about what is expected and the timings and when the names should appear.

Deconstruction of 1 professional & 1 school production company - Georgia Serrecchia

Deconstruction of Pixar:

Pixar is a computer animated film production company known for producing children's, Disney films.

Examples of Pixar films:

  • Toy Story (1995, 1999, 2010).
  • Finding Nemo (2003).
  • Cars (2006).
  • Monsters Inc (2001).
  • The Incredibles (2004).
  • Ratatouille (2007).
  • Up (2009).
  • WALL-E (2008).
Pixar began in 1979 and in 1986 became a corporation. In 2006 The Walt Disney Company bought Pixar and it now has 15 feature films, the first being Toy Story, and the most recent being Inside out. The studio have earned 15 Academy awards, 7 Golden Globe awards, and 11 Grammy awards among many other awards and acknowledgements.
Pixar do not change their opening for different films as it stays the same throughout each film.
Below is an example of Pixar's opening before the film, 'Lifted'.

Deconstruction of a school made company ('Confession'):

The genre of this video made is horror.

What I like:

  • In this video, I like the fact that the shots are all in dark environments because it sets the tone of the video and puts the audience in the correct mood.
  • Also, I like the long shots of the scenery because it creates an eerie atmosphere.
  • I like the way the production logo appears on the screen because it looks quite real and professional.

What could be improved:

  • Even though the production company logo appears the be professional, the actual video looks quite fake.
  • The quality of shots could be improved as they appear to be quite shaky.
  • The actors aren't talking loud enough in order for the viewers to hear them.
  • The whole video seems to be quite boring as there is no actual storyline.
How it is made:

The production company logo that they created looks quite simply as it's just text saying the name of the production company, 'red carpet productions', on a plain red background (a set of stairs) with a yellow outline. This was probably very easy to make however it was effective at the same time as the name of the company links with the image that accompanies it.

Sound, mise-en-scene:

Sound - There is some non-diegetic, slow paced, violent music at the start of the video. There is also non-diegetic dialogue as there's a narrator speaking in the background. Whilst the narrator is talking, there is also some violent music in the background which gets more fast paced and turns into piano music throughout until the end of the video.

Mise-en-scene - In this video, the fact that it is set in a church and there is scenes based on a church/gravesyard show that it may be about something mysterious and it could be about death.

Timeline of opening credits in Se7en - Georgia Serrecchia

Timeline of opening credits in the film 'Se7en':

I went through the opening credits in the film 'Se7en' and I put each individual shot onto a timeline in order to look at the different shots used, the typography and how many shots were used when throughout the credits.

Throughout this task, I have learnt that in order to make opening credits effective there must be a range of different shots and the typography should fit in with the shot used and the genre of the film.

Analysis of Se7en- Charlotte Wilson

Analysis of Se7en Film Opening

The opening of the film Se7en is very effective and strong opening to a film, firstly the music in the background was really effective it was very heavy, had scratching noises and heavy breathing/ grunts, it also had a continuous beat and at times became very eerie. It also matched in time to what was going on in the scene. For example when the the music became very sudden and loud the credits of peoples names would appear. As they appeared it flickered and came from different angles dragging along the screen which was very effective and fitted into the genre of horror by being white and black with a spooky ridged font. This is an example:
It was quite hard to get an accurate screenshot of this as it was moving very fast between the credits, which I found very effective and exciting as it was fast paced.

I like how this is the title of the film but is shown half way through the credits, and how it is so plain and simply but yet still very effective.

During the clip we see enigmatic clips of someone doing weird things, one of the things which caught my eye the most was how he was shredding his skin off their finger. The mise-en-scene is this tells us they doesn't want to leave his or hers finger prints anywhere leaving us to wonder why, engaging the viewer.

I liked when this was shown, we see lots of writing over and over again in a scrapbook which the person is making, looks like its something to do with religion with is conforming to one of the conventions of psychological horrors.

The use of the red background in this i find very effective, a common convention associated with horror is blood the use of the colour red being used tells us its a horror film from the start and will possible conform a bit of gore.

I really liked how some of the clips lapped over, in this picture there was an image of a man's head which had a line across his eyes, then the credits was added and after enigmatic writing in the background, giving us the idea the man is a bit of a psychopath.

In this clip I liked how random it was how he was sewing paper. We also seem the same piece of paper used from earlier on with lots of writing on over and over again.

Finally I really thought this very last scene before the last credit came up was very effective. We see the person cutting out the word GOD very carefully, this conforms to one of the conventions of psychological horrors, where religion is used, we also become engaged as we wonder why he is doing this. As this image was shown the music in the background went 'you got me closer to god' which linked in with this word, I found this very effective.

Timeline of 'Se7en' Opening Credits- Charlotte Wilson

Timeline of 'Se7en' Opening Credits

Our task was to watch the film opening from the film 'Se7en' and screenshot and record every time a different piece of text appeared e.g.new persons name and record the times it appeared. We then put our information into a timeline where we could see clearly the time different between each piece of text, how it was displayed and what was displayed.
This is my timeline below-

From this we can clearly see that the text appears very closely together, we also see that more names are shown at once towards the end of the credits. I have learnt from this that the title of the film doesn't have to be at the start of an opening can be placed at any time during it as long as it fits in and looks right. I've also realised that the typography works with the film genre of horror which is very important, the images in the background of the text is also very effective, it keeps the viewer more interested as there's something going on in the background and isn't always just black. I have also learnt it is important to keep the viewer engaged and not become uninterested before the film even starts. From this I have a better understanding of opening credits, these skills I will be able to use on my own opening.

'SE7EN Opening Credits - Mehrabi Ward

Timeline of 'SE7EN' Opening Credits:

Below are timelines of each and every shot during the opening credits of the film 'SE7EN'. I annotated around each shot what time each role was shown and what was said in each shot. From doing this I was also able to see when the film production company and the title of the film was shown and also how everything looked during the opening.

Analysis of Se7en - Georgia Serrecchia

Analysis of Se7en

The film opening of Se7en looks really professional and creative, as it flicks between shots very quickly. The effects used to bring in the names of the actors and producers looks very good and it all flows very well. I especially like the first 10 seconds when it shows the 'new line cinema
presents' and there's the book pages turning.

I really like the music that accompanies this scene because it matches the image and sound creepy and mysterious which may get the audience quite scared before they even watch it.

I also like this part when the text of the people's name is faded in and it starts to merge with the scene as it creates quite an eerie effect.

The film opening goes between clips very quickly which creates tension and suspense as does the fast paced music that goes with it.

These two images on the left show that all the shots in this film opening link together and they seem to show pages from the bible. Also, in between shots the screen flickers which is effective and also creates an eerie atmosphere.

Also, in this film opening there is a lot of mise-en-scene because the cutting off the finger on the blade and the blood represents death which is the main theme of the film Se7en.

Preliminary editing evaluation - Georgia Serrecchia

Evaluation of preliminary task - editing

What did we do?

After we had finished planning and filming the preliminary task we uploaded the clips onto final cut pro. Once we had chosen which clips we were going to use, we put them into the correct order and then started to edit them. Below shows the editing that we used in our video:

This screenshot shows the beginning clip where we used text saying the title of our preliminary video. We did this by choosing the text option and then choosing the colours and font that we wanted.

This screenshot shows the clips where we added slow motion to show Charlie walking over to Georgia sitting on the bench. We did this by just choosing the slow motion option and the speed we wanted it which was on final cut pro.

For this part of the video, we had to cut the clips and put them in different points throughout the video to show the shot - reverse shots and make the video run more smoothly.

This final shot is of the last clip where Georgia is picking up all the paperwork which Charlie threw on the floor and it shows our credits appearing on the screen. We also did this by choosing the text option and then adding effects to it.

What went well?

Whilst editing the video, deciding where and what type of editing to use went well because we decided quickly and we knew how to add each piece of editing without having any troubles.

Problems encountered:

We had some problems when trying to get the video to run continuously and look right because at the start it looked quite fake. However, in the end we managed to figure out a way in order to get the video to look right and flow correctly.

What could we do to improve?

If we had to do this again, I would've filmed different clips and increase the range of clips because then we could've included more types of editing to make the video look more creative and professional. I would also work on the continuity of the video.

Se7en analysis - Natasha McGill

Se7en analysis

In the film opening credits in Se7en, the way that the credits are shown are very effective because the music fits in very well with how the credits are shown, they are in time with when the names appear on the screen as they flicker left and right, up and down.  This makes it more effective as it portrays a scarier tone due to writing being in bold and rather blurry and flickering all the time. The way the credits were edited was very effective because they had the names of the producers and then they had videos of objects relating to the film.

The use of a bible being used was effective because the film is based on the seven deadly sins, so by using this in the opening credits and by cutting words out like God given an indication of what the film was going to be about.

There are some photos of when two images are used at once, so two images were shown but one was slightly opaque so we were able to see one clear image and another image underneath was slightly opaque. This happened when in the credits at the start a bible was being highlighted but we saw it being highlighted in two different places but at the same time.

The images used were very creative and it tied in well with what the film is going to be about. The use of using words like 'will' and 'God' tells the audience that the film is going to include religious aspects. Also the use of different colours, even thought most of them are black there are images when red is presented which could be symbolised as blood it looks effective.

The fact that there are difference images apart from the black backgrounds with the titles at the start the odd different shot looks effective this one showing a hand, which could suggest that there is something to do with identity and a mystery or it could just indicate that one person is being effected. This would make the audience think about the film would be about and this could foreshadow what happens in the film.

The use of different colours like red has connotations of blood and could suggest something bad will happen. Red also has connotation of the devil so as it is relating to God the devil could be included. The words God gives away a clue about what the movie is going to be about.
