Analysis of Se7en- Charlotte Wilson

Analysis of Se7en Film Opening

The opening of the film Se7en is very effective and strong opening to a film, firstly the music in the background was really effective it was very heavy, had scratching noises and heavy breathing/ grunts, it also had a continuous beat and at times became very eerie. It also matched in time to what was going on in the scene. For example when the the music became very sudden and loud the credits of peoples names would appear. As they appeared it flickered and came from different angles dragging along the screen which was very effective and fitted into the genre of horror by being white and black with a spooky ridged font. This is an example:
It was quite hard to get an accurate screenshot of this as it was moving very fast between the credits, which I found very effective and exciting as it was fast paced.

I like how this is the title of the film but is shown half way through the credits, and how it is so plain and simply but yet still very effective.

During the clip we see enigmatic clips of someone doing weird things, one of the things which caught my eye the most was how he was shredding his skin off their finger. The mise-en-scene is this tells us they doesn't want to leave his or hers finger prints anywhere leaving us to wonder why, engaging the viewer.

I liked when this was shown, we see lots of writing over and over again in a scrapbook which the person is making, looks like its something to do with religion with is conforming to one of the conventions of psychological horrors.

The use of the red background in this i find very effective, a common convention associated with horror is blood the use of the colour red being used tells us its a horror film from the start and will possible conform a bit of gore.

I really liked how some of the clips lapped over, in this picture there was an image of a man's head which had a line across his eyes, then the credits was added and after enigmatic writing in the background, giving us the idea the man is a bit of a psychopath.

In this clip I liked how random it was how he was sewing paper. We also seem the same piece of paper used from earlier on with lots of writing on over and over again.

Finally I really thought this very last scene before the last credit came up was very effective. We see the person cutting out the word GOD very carefully, this conforms to one of the conventions of psychological horrors, where religion is used, we also become engaged as we wonder why he is doing this. As this image was shown the music in the background went 'you got me closer to god' which linked in with this word, I found this very effective.
