Deconstruction of Genre - Mehrabi Ward

Deconstruction of Genre:

The horror film that I am going to analyse is 'The Conjuring'. This film is a horror but its sub genre is that it is a supernatural horror.
The conventions of a supernatural horror are:
  • There usually aren't any weapons used, if there are it is most commonly anything the victim can use which is surrounding them. Eg: a kitchen knife.
  • Protagonists family home as the main location, where previous residents have died
  • A certain character in the film can often become possessed.
  • The costumes of each character is usually very simple, as it doesn't distract the viewers attention away from the action going on in the scene
The shot above shows the mother of the family covered in a bed sheet as she has been possessed by the evil spirit in the house.
As the mother was most affected by the paranormal activity going on in the house and was the main victim she then became possessed.
In this scene the priest and his wife are trying to perform an exorcism. This conforms to a common convention of a supernatural horror.
This is the house in which people had lived in before where there had been cases of unsolved deaths of the previous residences' children.
This conforms to the convention of a supernatural horror as it is filmed in the protagonist's house and there is also a storyline with the people who had lived there before which contributed or maybe even caused the supernatural spirit to be there.

This shot shows the family who were effected by the paranormal activity. They are part of a regular family therefore they're wearing normal/casual clothes, so it would be strange if they were to be wearing extravagant clothes, which is another convention of supernatural horrors.
