Filming Evaluation: Mehrabi Ward

Filming Evaluation:

The people in my group for making the film opening was myself, Natasha McGill, Charlie Wilson and Georgia Serricchia. When it came to filming we also used Georgia's cousin called Zoe as the little girl as she fitted the type of 'image' we wanted the girl in our film opening to have. We filmed all our shots on one day on the 10th of January 2016.

What Went Well:
Overall when we were in the woods I think that the filming itself went quite well. I think that the best thing about filming was our choice of location as when we got there we did a further exploration inside the army bunker, and found cartoon drawings on the walls of a person being hung and also a pyramid with an eye inside, next to it saying 'they're coming'. This then gave us the idea to use this as our name for our film, as we thought it linked in well and also looked quite effective.
The other thing that went quite well was that overall as a group we were very organised on the day, as everyone brought everything they were responsible for bringing, ie, costume, props, camera etc.
As we were all organised and knew the order of the shots and basically what we wanted to shoot this made the filming process fairly quick and there was no need to return to the location in the future as all our shots didn't need to be altered and we had enough footage for it to all make sense as well as it reaching 2 minutes which was what the requirement for the length of the film opening to be.

Problems Encountered:
Although overall the filming process ran quite smoothly, there were a few minor problems that we came across. One of the problems we had was that when we were actually filming the footage, we were using a tripod for the majority of the time however, when it came to shooting a pan or a tilt shot, the handle on the tripod to manoeuvre the camera was quite jumpy so at some points these types of shots were not as smooth as we would have liked. However when it came to editing our footage we identified the jumpy shots and cut them where necessary.
Another slightly larger problem we encountered would be the amount of mud in the woods which we hadn't planned for. We wanted our actor (Zoe) to wear thick socks however it was too wet and muddy for her to do so, this meant she had to wear regular shoes which we thought ruined the effect of the costume. So when it came to filming long shots of her we tried to have the pyjama bottoms covering the majority of her shoes. But it became harder when we were filming close up shots of the doll she was holding as her shoes were very close to the shot so we had to be careful not to get her shoes in the shot, and when it came to editing there were some shots where we had to crop the end off as you could see her shoes in it.
Then final problem that we came across which was before we filmed, was that we couldn't find a costume for the black figure that we had imagined. We wanted our supernatural character to wear a black veil over the face and wear all black clothing to give the same sort of image as the woman in black which I had previously explored in my deconstruction of costume blog. However when we were looking for costumes in stores and online before our filming date we were unable to find a costume like the one we had imagined so we had to resort to second best which was to dress our supernatural character (Georgia) in an all black cloak, however we thought that not having her face in the shot at all was the most effective way to capture the character.
The final small problem we came across when filming was that the pyjamas I had organised for the young girl character were short-sleeved and as the weather was very cold, this resulted in Zoe having to keep putting on a coat in between shots as she was so cold.

Even Better If:
It would have been better if the pyjamas I chose to use were slightly warmer, most definitely it would have been better if they had long sleeves but I could have chosen ones made of a slightly warmer material. As on the day of filming we didn't really follow are storyboard as some of the shots we had planned to do wouldn't have been effective at all and for a couple of them we wouldn't have been able to perform them anyway due to a lack of resources. But this meant I had to draw an updated story board with all of the shots we did end up shooting and any new shots we had thought of on the day of filming, which ended up being quite a few which I thought made our footage better than it would have been if we followed our original storyboard. It would have been better if we could have got the costume we originally wanted for the supernatural character, this may have been due to lack of organisation previous to filming which we will keep in mind if we were to do this project again.

However even though we did have some problems and not everything went to plan as well as we might have liked I am still very pleased with how our footage has turned out and think the film opening as a whole is very effective.
