Deconstruction of Opening credits, Bedlam - Natasha McGill

Opening credits Bedlam

At the start of the film opening the text flickers onto the screen and a big room with a boy sitting in the chair is shown. The way the writing flickers and jumps about indicated that the film is going to be scary and jumpy. Also the use of the dark room with one single light portrays a scarier tone as it seems scarier. Throughout the opening credits the use of white writing is used, this is because all the backgrounds are dark and so this way the names are clearly shown. The font of the writing is quite jagged an so fits in with the theme of horror being out of placed and quite eerie.

Following on from the previous image it jumps into a pan across a room which looks like a hospital, the dark surrounding makes it a suitable place for a horror movie to be based because it looks scary. The miss-en-scene has a lot of different objects included in the photo which could indicate that there will be a lot of problems in the film. While the camera moves across this room it flickers and is distort which indicates it could get quite hectic and dangerous.

The image is blurred out which has an effect because it could suggest that somethings gone wrong and its a blur, also the room the girl is sitting in looks rather run down and doesn't have many objects in the room. This makes it look anther empty and with the use of plain colours like white is usual for a girl not to have a brightened up room, so it gives the impression that something could happen. Also with the girl sitting in a white gown on her own looking away from the camera maybe suggests that she is victim.

In the image below is rather usual and quite mysterious because it could get the viewer thinking why is there a man sitting in a room with a lot of paper which is rather flammable while there is fire around him. So the use of editing looks very effective because it could make the viewer think something is gong to happen when they are made to think different. The way the room is lit mainly by the fire is rather effective and the way they have positioned the camera, as a long shot is shown so the viewer can see the whole surrounding.

The way this image is shown is rather creepy as it looks like it has come from the perspective of a ghost or a spirit which has blurred vision. This is very effective as it could either be someone running as fast motion was used to speed the clip up, into the never-ending darkness in which they could be seen as being trapped which also ties in well with the theme of horror. The walls are plain and the corridor itself looks very mysterious and creepy.

The way this image is presented is very effective, because it shows at first the lady looking into the mirror at her own reflection but as she turns her head the reflection in the mirror stays looking at her, this is rather creepy because it could be someone else on the other side of the mirror who is watching her and the the fact that she is in the room on her own and the walls around her look rather run down sends out a scarier tone.

The fact that a doll is being shown in the opening credits indicates it could be used throughout the film, but this is a good prop to use as it fits in well in the horror genre. The way the doll is used so by having a close up shot of its face makes it seem scarier and could make the viewer on edge to what is going to happen to the doll and why is it used in the credits.

The title is still in the same font throughout the opening and the way it flickers on screen at the end is very effective. Also by using the hospital location again clearly indicates that this is going to be a main location where it is going to be based.

The timings of the non-diegetic sound went very well with the images being presented and at one point there was a sound of a heart beat which could suggest times running out and the fast-paced images fitted in well with the sound of the heart beat. Then the music came back and it seemed fast-paced and rushed which could indicate what the film is going to be like quite hectic and quite a lot of suspense and tension.
